Match Reports
Sorry for such a delayed post, just been really busy over the past few weeks. I guess all of us Fedfans have sorrow faces as Roger was beaten by Tomas Berdych in four sets in the quarterfinals of the US Open. Roger was seeded no.1 at the start of the tournament and was the favourite to win after making everyone look like amateurs at Cincinnati. I guess a quarterfinal lost was not what anyone expected. Roger comfortably cruised past all his opponents in straight sets on the way to the quarterf... Continue reading ...
Federer wins 21st Master 1000 title - Review of Cincinnati
Been a while since my last post, but here is the review of the Western and Southern Open in Cincinnati, the last Master 1000 tournament before the US Open. Before the tournament started, I expected Roger to be fit and fired up for Cincinnati, as he withdrew from Toronto to get an extra week rest. The courts at Cincy are some of the fastest on the tour and we know Roger is probably the best fast hardcourt player of all time so everyone had high expectations for him. Historically he has played ... Continue reading ...
Fatigued Federer falls short of gold in Olympic final
Roger had to settle for silver at the Olympic Games, losing in
straight sets against home favourite Andy Murray 6-2 6-1 6-4. Roger was cleary
tired after playing a in epic 4.5 semifinal against Del Potro, so that's the reason
why he got crushed. I didn't expect him to recover so quickly after the
semifinal, he's a 31 year old athlete now! He just didn't have enough gas in
the tank for the final. Took me days for the result to sink in and realise it's
not such a big deal that Roger lost, one... Continue reading ...
Federer overcomes Del Potro in a 4hr marathon match
What an epic match between Roger and Juan Martin Del Potro of Argentina! The contest lasted 4hrs and 26 minutes, the longest match in the Open era and Olympic tennis history! It brings me memories of their meeting in the US Open final back in 2009 where Del Potro outlasted Federer in five sets, but this time it was Roger who outlasted Del Potro 19-17 in the decider! I was very happy to be able to watch the match live on my laptop, even if it wasn't in high definition!Roger had a slow start to... Continue reading ...
Federer reaches semifinals at Olympics
FEDERER VS ISTOMINRoger faced Denis Istomin in the 3rd Rd, started well with a break to lead 3-0 but got broken back to level the match. At 15-30 5-5, rain was starting to pour down and the match was delayed for half an hour. When play resumed, Roger had to save two break points but quickly found momentum and broke Istomin to take the first set 7-5.Once again, Roger took a 3-0 lead in the 2nd set but this time Istomin failed to make any impression on his return games and Roger comfortably won... Federer advances to third round at Olympics
For the rest of the Olympics, I'm probably going to have to do 2 match reports together in one post because there isn't much to type since my channel can't access full live coverage of the tennis in London so sadly I missed both of Roger's matches. Pretty amazingly, he was drawn to face two opponents that had almost beaten him in the early of rounds of the past Wimbledons. Well he beat Falla 6-3 5-7 6-3 which for me is not too surprising after Falla took Roger to five sets back in 2010, what ... Continue reading ...
Federer wins 7th Wimbledon, 17th Slam and reclaims No.1!
What an emotional day for Roger and fans after he won his 7th Wimbledon now equaling Pete Sampras's record! He also increases his tally of Grand Slams to 17! And is back up to No.1 in the rankings at 30 years of age overtaking Djokovic and Nadal in one tournament! So glad to see that his drought has ended, last triumph was Australian Open 2010 where he also beat Murray. This time, the encounter was definitely closer and the support of British fans was huge, sadly for them Roger ended Murray's... Continue reading ...
Federer dethrones Djokovic in four sets - Now for Murray
Roger's done it, he's beaten Djokovic in a very convincing victory to reach his 8th Wimbledon final! Always the Greatest Of All Time! Before the match Roger had already thought up of a Djoko-bashing plan, he broke at his first opportunity at 3-2. He closed out the set 6-3 in a quick 24 minutes. Djokovic looked if he'd had a slow start, Roger was the one who was aggressive early and had comfortable service games, never facing a break point.Djokovic seemed to of finally woken up in the second s... Federer crushes Youzhny to advance to SFs
Total cruise match for Roger, beating Youzhny 6-1 6-2 6-2. Looks like his back injury isn't such a concern, he was dominant on serve, never broken despite Youzhny's two break point chances in the third set. I think Youzhny is one of those players who will never beat Roger, now the H2H is an embarrassing 14-0, even during the third set, Youzhny called out to Andre Agassi who was in the Royal Box for advice on how to beat Roger!
Well I guess there was nothing really to critize about Roger's pe... Continue reading ...
FEDERER SURVIVES BENNETEAU SCARE IN 3RD RD EN ROUTE TO BEATING MALISSE
Apology for the late post, I didn't get to see much from Roger's match against Julien Benneteau and what a thriller it was! Unfortunately I had to see highlights, as channel Seven was broadcasting Hewitt/Guccione's doubles match instead, that's what you get for living in Australia! But I did get to see Roger's encounter with Xavier Malisse from start to finish and both match reports are in this post.FEDERER VS BENNETEAUWhen Nadal got beaten by Rosol a day earlier, not anyone was expecting F... Federer untroubled, through to 3rd Rd at Wimbledon
Two total smashing victories for Roger at Wimbledon so far, it's a good sign for his chances at winning his 17th slam and reclaiming No.1! He beat Albert Ramos 6-1 6-1 6-1 and Fabio Fognini 6-1 6-3 6-2, dominant on serve and net play. That's only 9 games dropped in two matches, which is impressive for a player his age. Both Ramos and Fognini were at no stage a threat to Roger and his aggressive play left them standing. The unforced error count has reduced - another good sign as in RG he was hi... Continue reading ...
Federer beaten by Haas in Halle Final
I have decided to scrap Roger's semifinal match against Youzhny, it was a great match for Roger and superfast as well, there was nothing to really to write - summing the match up Roger was just too good as he usually always is.Roger was the favourite coming into this match, he started off breaking Haas in the first game and held serve but not before long Haas broke back after a mishit forehand by Roger at break point. Roger didn't have the aggression in his shots suddenly and Haas was hittin... Continue reading ...
Federer overcomes 25 Raonic aces to reach Halle Semifinals
The clay court season was very difficult for Roger but now its back to grass at the Gerry Weber Open in Halle which is one of my favourite tennis venues. Roger has won here five times before and was honoured this year with a street named after him.
Roger started Halle quite well, beating Florian Mayer 6-4 7-5, firing 11 aces and prevented the German from converting his only break point opportunity. The grass courts at Halle are pretty fast and Roger adapted well from clay courts to play som... Continue reading ...
Federer beaten in straight sets at Roland Garros
Roger suffered a straight sets loss to Novak Djokovic ending his hopes of a 17th slam. He was the slight favourite coming into this match after the two marathon matches Djokovic played, but even that didn't prevent Djokovic from overpowering him. I had limited live streaming and had to use my mobile for live scores from the second set. Overall, other than a few great rallies, it was a boring match.A lot of momentum swings in this match, Roger started well, played aggressive, broke to lead 3-2... Continue reading ...
Federer beats Del Potro in five sets, reaches quarterfinals
Sorry about the delayed posts, I was a bit too busy in the past few days. I've decided to summarize Roger's past three matches all in one post.FEDERER VS MAHUTAnother slight test for Roger, he didn't really keep his rhythm throughout the whole match. Mahut played well, considering clay courts don't favour his style. He broke Roger in the fourth set, but failed to consolidate it and Roger closed out the match 6-3 4-6 6-2 7-5.FEDERER VS GOFFINGoffin played extremely well at the start of match a... Federer fends off an Ungur challenge to reach 3rd Rd
I must say, I'm slightly concerned about Roger performance so far in RG. He's been playing his C game in both matches, if this goes on, he might not even make the semis. It's fair to say Ungur was playing well for his standards after upsetting Nalbandian in the 1st Rd and he'd never played Roger before.
Roger was looking fine in the first two sets taking them 6-3 6-2, he saved two set points at 4-5 in the third, forced the set into a tiebreak. He played some 1st strike tennis and held two mat... Continue reading ...
Federer advances to 2nd Round of Roland Garros
An okay performance by Federer's standards in this match 6-2 7-5 6-3, but in the first round of a grand slam doesn't give anything away of his actual performance. There's been times where Roger has played well up to the quarters and he drops off suddenly - most recently in Melbourne this year where he was the favourite after beating Del Potro in straight sets.
Back to the match, it was a bit messy - 47 unforced errors from Rog in a comfortable three set match is dreadful, but as I said above,... Continue reading ...
Federer to face Djokovic in Rome Semis
Roger will meet Novak Djokovic for the 25th in the Rome semifinal after dismissing Andreas Seppi, who at no stage at all, posed a threat. The Federer Express had an astounding 81% 1st serve accuracy and won in 54 minutes.
Earlier, Roger was tested against 2003 French Open champion Juan Carlos Ferrero in a three set match, but on that occasion he was never looking at departing.
I predict its going to be a tight 3 setter, Djokovic played Tsonga in his quarterfinal and totally crushed him. But y... Continue reading ...
Federer cruises to 3rd Round in Rome
A very nice start for Roger, an easy victory against clay court specialist Carlos Berlocq 6-3 6-4. He managed to adapt quickly to the different conditions and the slow red clay compared to Madrid. There were not really any problems after it was looking that Roger might withdraw from Rome due to preparations for Roland Garros and Wimbledon.
Roger started extremely well, breaking Berlocq's serve and taking the first set 6-3. A good strategy from Roger by coming into the net as he won 18 out of ... Continue reading ...
Federer wins 20th Masters 1000 title
A great fighting performance by Roger today to win his 20th Masters 1000 title, he now ties the record with Nadal. I must say I wasn't expecting Berdych to play so well, especially in the first set where he broke in Roger's first service game and eventually won the set 6-3. Roger's shot placement wasn't good, and the explosive Berdych serve kept him from returning balls effectively.
A crucial moment came in the 2nd set where Roger broke to take a 2-0 lead. He kept the serve clutch, but was u... Continue reading ...
Federer reaches Madrid final - Plays Berdych
An awesome performance by Roger to reach the final and set up a clash with Tomas Berdych. He played well the whole match and never allowed Tipsarevic to settle into rhythm.
It was very windy and Federer was on the front foot, playing the drop shot and coming into the net. Breaking Tipsarevic twice, he secured the set 6-2.
Once again Federer broke at 2-1 in the 2nd set with a great cross-court forehand return. There were a few winners from Tipsarevic, but he never managed to adapt with the hea... Continue reading ...
Federer beats Ferrer to reach Madrid semis
A good match for Roger, beating Ferrer in straight sets and
now will face Janko Tipsarevic in the SF.
Federer
broke at 1-1 after a double fault by Ferrer, it was crucial as both players
were holding their serves well for the rest of the match. Ferrer seemed to be
on the front foot in most baseline rallies and fired powerful winners all over
the court. Federer was having no problems on his service games though and
secured the first set 6-4.
Both
players had been using the drop shot well, a... Continue reading ...
Federer progresses to Madrid quarterfinals
After a five week rest for Roger, it was back to business in Madrid. He had to overcome a strong in-form Milos Raonic and Frenchman Richard Gasquet. Against Raonic, Federer was very rusty and lacking consistency in his ground strokes in the first set. Both players were holding their serve well, but a dreadful game from Federer led to Raonic serving out the set comfortably.
Federer had to save even more break points in his opening service game in the 2nd set, but saved them with big serving. H... Continue reading ...

Roger Federer's 2011 Season Review

Features
My first actual post - I had already written this early this year, but delayed the start of this blog. HARD COURT SEASON Federer started 2011 on fire winning the Doha tournament ousting Nikolay Davydenko in the final, 6-3 6-4. In the Australian Open he had a major scare in the 2nd round, facing Gilles Simon who had a winning head to head record with Federer coming into the match. Federer played brilliantly in the first two sets, before Simon upped his performance and began ripping winners fr... Continue reading ...
